DCFS Stakeholders,

We have seen first hand over the past 90 days the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on Louisiana's coastal communities. Families that have never before needed outside help are turning to food stamps, food banks and other aid programs to keep their families afloat during this trying time.

Many of you are already offering your services to the families and individuals on Louisiana's coast and, today, DCFS is asking for your assistance in distributing information about where impacted-residents can seek help from this agency.

We are encouraging all agencies with a stake in the well-being of our state's coastal residents to print out our Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) flyer - www.dcfs.louisiana.gov/SNAPFlyer - to distribute in your communities. It includes information about current SNAP outreach locations, basics about the program and what is needed to apply. We will continue to update this fact sheet as any information (such as outreach locations) changes.

Additionally, the DCFS website is an excellent source of information about available benefits, including SNAP, Family Independence Temporary Assistance (FITAP), Kinship Care Subsidy (KCSP) and the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Residents can apply online at www.dcfs.Louisiana.gov/ApplyOnline, download an application to fill out and mail in, or find the closest SNAP outreach center to ask questions and fill out an expedited application.

Thank you again for your help as we work to keep children safe, help individuals and families become self-sufficient and provide safe refuge during disasters.

Sincerely,

Ruth Johnson

DCFS Secretary
