Child Poverty Prevention Council Meeting Slated for Thursday
WHAT: Second meeting of the Child Poverty Prevention Council.
WHEN: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, January 15, 2009
WHERE: John J. Hainkel, Jr. Room
Louisiana State Capitol, Baton Rouge
WHO: Kinsey Alden Dinan, Senior Policy Associate at the National Center for Children in Poverty, will make a presentation to the Child Poverty Prevention Council. Dinan is a nationally-recognized expert on the impact of workforce supports, tax policy and public benefits on low-income families. In addition to these policy areas, Dinan will address the limitations in measuring poverty rates and discuss the effectiveness of different anti-poverty strategies.
WHY: Act 599 of the 2008 Regular Legislative Session charged the council with developing a plan for reducing the state's child poverty rate by 50 percent over ten years. Currently, Louisiana's child poverty rate is the second-highest in the nation.
The council includes representatives from six state agencies, six statewide nonprofit groups, two universities, the Louisiana Children's Cabinet, and designees of the House and Senate Health and Welfare Committees.
