The Solutions to Poverty (SToP) movement is a comprehensive approach targeted at reducing poverty in Louisiana. This movement came into existence in 2004 when community conversations around the state and an historic Poverty Summit in Monroe engaged record numbers of Louisiana citizens from a wide array of backgrounds in a dialogue about poverty. From the dialogue came a clear message: Poverty is too costly for our state to ignore.
Three focal points of the Solutions to Poverty movement
- Community
A grassroots approach that empowers communities to identify and utilize local resources effectively. Community is the project’s most important element and serves as a catalyst for positive change. - Policy
Communities create initiatives and suggest improvements to programs that enhance the quality of life of Louisiana citizens.
- Legislation
Communities work to impact legislation that creates opportunities for Louisiana citizens to move from poverty to self-sufficiency.
It all starts with you!
We invite all Louisiana citizens to play an active role in the movement by participating in local SToP Coalition meetings or signing up for the STOP email listserv. You can play a leading role in addressing the issue of poverty in our state!.
Please contact the STOP Community Specialists with any questions.
